Modern Art Tour: New York and Chicago

 

This very exciting art tour focuses on modern art in New York City and Chicago. Between these two cities, there are housed the most wonderful examples of modern and contemporary art. The tour will give you the opportunity to see, learn about and most of all enjoy contemporary art in all its guises.

Help will be provided by the tour leader Majena Mafe, who is an experienced artist, art-teacher and NY traveler, to understand what you are looking at, learn the vocabulary of art speak, and uncover the rhymes and reasons behind contemporary artists approaches. As an aside she will help you find the best shopping spots and jazz clubs, and how to negotiate the subways of the Big Apple!

Itinerary in brief

The program is designed to offer you an experience you’ll never forget, two weeks of looking at and learning to appreciate and understand contemporary art in NY city and the beautiful Chicago. You will return home all fired up with inspiration, knowledge and first hand experience of looking at and fully appreciating truly great contemporary art. In the evening, after a day’s perusal and shopping, we will discuss art over a glass of wine in either the Italian district or Soho…Here you have the opportunity to consolidate what you have seen, by asking questions, and taking part in general discussions.

Tour Guide and Leader

Majena Mafe, (BA VArts with Hons & MFA ViArt MPhil CWriting)isa respected visual artist and teacher she is a lecturer in Creative Industries Visual Art at QUT, the BIA and is an arts mentor and art therapist. She is also a published writer. With over twenty years of experience, exhibiting and teaching art, her interest and talent lies in developing an individual’s passionate interest in art and their creativity.   

How much does the tour cost?

The tour has been priced with a minimum of 10 people in the group. The cost of the tour is $6220.00 per person for economy class travel and share twin-bedded room. A $1500.00 deposit is required at time of booking. This price is based on what it would cost to do this itinerary this year. There is the chance of discount air fares coming available each December and these will be sort, and the savings transferred to the participants. After a deposit is paid the tour can be paid of as a lay-by system through the Blue Heeler Travel Centre if you prefer. See details below. No visas are required if you have an Australian passport.

  • Art lectures and information at all significant museums and sights. Evening
  • discussions of art, art history and theory and how to apply what you are seeing to your understanding of art in general and your own work if you are a practicing artist.

  • Travel insurance (this is strongly recommended you purchase)
  • Departure taxes
  • Tips to guides, drivers and individual services, travel within the two cities subways etc
  • Meals that is breakfast lunch and dinners on the tour
  • Personal expenses, such as laundry, phone, fax bills and room service.
  • Entrance fees for galleries and museums

  • What kind of people go on Art Study Tours and Retreats?

The single feature which distinguishes this study tour group is the participants wish to become well informed about the art they see in the places they visit. The interests of the group will be wide-ranging, such painting and art, history, fine arts, music, architecture, gastronomy and literature. Some of the members of the group will be experienced artists; others will be beginning out on their journey. A few members of the group will be novices. And some will just be interested in visiting the big apple as part of an art based group. All are welcome.

  • What will the weather be like?

Beautiful autumn weather, bring a light jacket but temperatures should be mild and pleasant.
