Introduction to Lacquer Miniatures and Icon Painting
Workshop 5-6 November 2011
Come and learn the traditional techniques and construction of two of the most gorgeous and beautiful painting styles. Lacquer Miniatures and Icon Panel making. Learn how to create traditional gesso-ed plaster panels, how to make egg-tempera paint and how to paint with it, how to apply and use gold leaf and use traditional lacquering techniques.
Both Lacquered miniatures and Icon paintings are beautiful objects, full of light and exquisite colour. While making them is a very ancient art dating back to the 9th century, the techniques, following original recipes and pigments, are very easy to learn. In this weekend workshop instruction will be given to everything you need to know to create your own miniatures or icons … you can choose.
Focus will be on learning the necessary techniques, how to model form, use of the paint, colour mixing and applying gold leaf. Your miniatures or icons will be created on plaster panels that you can carve or embellish to echo the texture of the oldest icons. Both traditional and or contemporary images can be used as models for creating your own original work. No previous painting experience necessary ... no really!!
